Some important information on Coronavirus

The latest global flu virus threat, coronavirus (COVID-19), first started in 2019 in Wuhan, China.    WHO describes coronaviruses as a large family of viruses found in animals.  In rare cases they are zoonotic, meaning they can be transmitted from animals to humans.   Other examples of deadly infectious coronaviruses include MERS-CoV (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) and SARS-CoV (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

To help you better understand these viruses, we have used a report from NBC News published on 5 March 2020.

How COVID-19 compares to past epidemics

MERS-CoV
Cases: 2,499
Deaths: 861
SARS-CoV
Cases: 8,437
Deaths: 813
COVID-19 (As at 5.3.20)
Cases: 94,718
Deaths: 3,278

COVID-19 makes people sick.  Symptoms range from a mild cold to deadly pneumonia.   Older adults and patients with existing respiratory or heart conditions appear to be the most at risk from this virus.

Australia’s Department of Health recommends that individuals practice good hygiene to protect against infections.  This includes regular handwashing with soap and water, using a tissue to cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and avoiding close contact like touching, hugging and kissing.  If you are well, you do not need to wear a surgical mask.

If you fall ill and suspect you may have the virus, seek medical attention immediately.  The government also advises self-quarantine for people who have recently visited affected countries.
